Phil GoldbergPhilip Goldberg has been studying India’s spiritual traditions for more than 50 years, as a practitioner, teacher, and author. He is regarded as a leading expert on the historic transmission of India’s spiritual and philosophical heritage to the West.

A public speaker, spiritual counselor, and Interfaith Minister, he was trained as a Transcendental Meditation teacher in 1970 and taught the practice for much of the 1970s. He has since led workshops, lectured, and taught at major venues, both in person (at Kripalu, Esalen, and others) as well as online, where he’s taught classes for Hindu University of America, Spirituality & Practice, and other sites as well as private courses on the Bhagavad Gita and the Upanishads. He teaches a traditional form of effortless meditation termed bhavateet dhyan in Sanskrit.

Phil has presented at The Parliament of the World’s Religions, the American Academy of Religion, and many other conferences and universities. His essays and articles have appeared in numerous publications, including Spirituality & Health and Unity Magazine. His 2023 Unity article “Rethinking the Borders of Spirit” won a prestigious Folio award for best single article in the religious/spiritual division. He has authored or coauthored more than 25 books, including Roadsigns on the Spiritual Path; the award-winning American Veda: From Emerson and the Beatles to Yoga and Meditation, How Indian Spirituality Changed the West; the seminal biography The Life of Yogananda: The Story of the Yogi Who Became the First Modern Guru; and Spiritual Practice for Crazy Times: Powerful Tools to Cultivate Clarity, Calm and Courage. Phil hosts the Spirit Matters podcast, where he interviews leading spiritual figures, and leads American Veda Tours to India.
